This post is the second in the Work From Anywhere/Extra Income Ideas series where I’ll be providing details on how you can move towards a location independent lifestyle and have the freedom to work from anywhere and travel the world – as and when you please. This weeks topic is blogging. (Yes, thats me below at my ever messy desk…if anyone has seen my scissors, let me know…)
If you asked anyone these days if they know someone who blogs, you’d pretty much get a ‘yes’ every time – there’s no doubt about it, blogging has taken off in a big way. And the great thing about it is that anyone can do it – no matter your age or technical ability – and be successful. Success means different things to different people of course, and while many people get into blogging simply to share stories with the world or reach out to friends and family living thousands of miles away, many others start blogging to make a new career for themselves. They want the freedom to be able to work from anywhere in the world and make lots of money while doing it.
I think a lot of people hear about others out there making decent money and assume that if they set up a simple blog and update it once a week that they will miraculously become millionaires within a year. There is one simple fact that they have managed to block out however, and that is that making money from blogging is not easy. You never hear about the number of hours thats gone into growing a successful blog and you certainly don’t hear about the late nights spent at your laptop when everyone else in your house is fast asleep or the sacrifices made. Blogging is not an easy ride, so understandably it’s going to take time to be earning income from it. It’s not all doom and gloom though, the great thing is that if you can get your head around these realities, then it certainly is possible to make money, and not only that – if you have the drive and hunger to succeed then you can make a LOT of money blogging.
I started Woman Seeks World with the hope of it one day allowing me to be able to work from anywhere and support my location independent lifestyle. There are a lot of other (and easier!) ways to achieve this goal (see this post if you want to know what they are!), but for me, I’m passionate about the creativity that goes into blogging and writing to an audience that it was a no brainer that this was the path for me.
If you are thinking you would also like to start a blog to one day achieve location independence, then my advice would be to start as early as you can. Start now! Blogging is about consistency and building an audience, so the sooner you can start to engage people and build your reputation and brand, the better.
If you have an idea for your blog already then that’s great! If not, focus on finding an area that interests you and start brainstorming everything about it – get the creative juices flowing and you’ll be surprised what you come up with! Make sure it’s a topic you are 100% committed to though – you might discover an untapped niche that you think could make a lot of money, but if in six months you are completely bored and have run out of motivation to write any more about it, then it’s never going to make you rich, so you might as well choose something you love because it’s this love and passion that will make you successful, not the idea itself.
There is no way that I can ever cover everything you need to know about blogging in this one post, so it’s something I’ll be writing about regularly from now on. I don’t proclaim to have all the answers, but I have done a lot of research and learnt some things the hard way in the last six months, so if I can help someone just starting out to navigate their way through the blogging maze a little quicker or easier, then great.
Just remember, making money from blogging is not only possible, it’s pretty much guaranteed if you have the drive to make it a successful business. And what’s even better about blogging is that it allows you to work from anywhere in the world and be involved in something that you’ve created from scratch in an area you love. Whats not to love about a career like that?!

Great post mate, as is the overall blog. I love the direction it’s taking. Inspiring. Creativity (through blogging, freelancing, winning the lottery or whatever) and freedom; that’s what it should be about and this post has done a good job of reminding me (and I’m sure others) of that. So really just wanted to say cheers.
Thanks for a great and inspirational post!
I started nearly 3 months ago writing my blog about food and travel. These are two topics I will always love and be obsessed about and enjoy conversing about. But I also included my love of writing and photography within my blog content in hope to get more exposure as a writer.
I do hope to one day generate income from my blog to allow me to travel more often. It will take time, patience and persistence but I am excited. To generate more readers I have decided to create a business card to leave at restaurants and tourist areas.
I look forward to reading unique ideas on how to spur on more buzz in relation to your blog and your overall plan. I have to say I have really enjoyed your blog so far!

Great post and I agree with everything you’ve said – except that your desk is messy. You obviously haven’t seen mine (because I would *never* post a picture of it – nobody would ever speak to me again). Although curiously I can actually see my scissors at the moment.
Thanks Catherine! Glad you’re enjoying it – I think after all the discussions we’ve all had sitting around the back yard about how we all feel lost and hate our jobs has made me realise that I’m the only one that can do something about it! I look forward to reading your musings when the blog is up and running! : )
Hi Murissa, thank you, its great to hear comments like yours and know that we are all in this together!! Great idea with the business cards too, I’m also in the process of designing some… I look forward to hearing how your blog progresses too, we just have to keep going and we’ll be fine! : )
Haha! Thanks Amanda…well, you know what they say – ‘Messy desk, Clean mind’… or is it the other way around?! Jury’s still out on the scissors, slightly jealous that yours are visible!! Hehe : )
LOL I’m going with “messy desk, genius mind”, what do you reckon?
I like your post, but one essential element is missing: How to make money from blogging. You write, “Just remember, making money from blogging is not only possible, it’s pretty much guaranteed if you have the drive to make it a successful business.” But that’s all we get. I just came upon your blog so I have yet to read your other posts, which might illuminate this point.
I’ve been blogging for a few years (my first was a travel blog & now I blog about the writing life), but other than blogging for another business for pay (which I also do) or posting Google ads (which I don’t want), I’m not sure how it could lead to a lucrative–or at least subsistence–income. If you can share any hints, I’d appreciate it. Thanks!
Hi Nicole, thanks for your comment. I recently started this series about how to make money in various ways (blogging, freelancing etc), so a lot more information will be coming in the next few weeks and months. This blog is about my journey to becoming location independent and getting my online income to where its replacing my job, so I’ll be sharing all of my lessons learnt and successes (and any failures!) openly along the way. Hope you stick around and let me know what you think! : )
Haha, I’ll pay that!
Inspiring post you have here! 🙂 I’ve been travelling for years now and I concentrated on my personal blog (micamyx.com) and I also maintained a number of Entertainment blogs. At the first year of the sites, I really worked hard in adding quality contents. Now, it is generating income. It may not be that big, but at least it is earning 🙂 For now, I am concentrating on my travel blog to document my trips with the hope of earning from it to. It’s a work in progress, and i am determined to make it work. Cheers for us! 😀
I have the same Cadbury’s Creme Egg mug! It’s sitting on my desk as I type!
Sorry, that’s the first thing I noticed! Great article, and great tips 🙂
Haha, creme eggs forever!! How funny – glad you found the article helpful too, thanks! : )
Ha ha ha! I love the tone of your writing. I am still living in the Stone Age, and I didn’t know that one could make money through blogging, until I read your post. For me, the money comes in second. I love writing but I don’t know where to write my ideas and feelings on. I can’t be writing them on the wall. I would really love and appreciate it if, someday, you can give me tips on how to start. Thanks a lot for your posts, they are truly entertaining and informative.
Thanks Raiha, so happy to hear that you enjoy my posts and find them helpful! I’d be more than happy to help in anyway I can – if you want to get in touch via the contact form with any questions I’ll get back to you as soon as I can, or we could organise to chat on skype. Just let me know!
