What’s Hot In Washington DC

The US of A is quickly becoming my favourite place to visit – I love the food, atmosphere and wide range of things to do depending on where you find yourself. My most recent trip took me to the heart of the country, Washington DC, and while it’s so different to cities New York or LA, I found it charming and full of pumping restaurants and loads of cool people walking the streets.

I was pleasantly surprised at how laid back it was considering one of the most influential men in the world resides there, and the number of memorials to past world events and people will mean you’ll come home with some history facts cemented firmly in your brain. That is, if you don’t overindulge in one of the cities finest bars!

Here is my guide to what’s hot in DC.

Walk The Memorial Trail

If you love a monument, then there’s no question that DC is the place for you. From the iconic Washington monument and a giant Abraham Lincoln, to memorials for WWI, WWI, Korean war, Vietnam war, and the new Martin Luther King memorial etched from stone – the city has so much so see, so I’d recommend allowing a day and a half to see everything. Take comfortable shoes, food and lots of photos!

Treat Yourself To A Top Hotel

It is the nation’s capital after all, so why not take after the Obama’s and spend a night in style? We stayed at the Palomar Hotel in the Dupont Circle area of the city, and it’s not often I’ll say this, but it was possibly one of the best hotels stays I’ve ever had – huge rooms, comfy beds to relax into after all that walking, and great service – something I cherish after living in big bad London for six years! If you are ever in the city, seriously check it out!

Eat At DC’s Oldest Restaurant

I love my food – that’s a given, so I was stoked to discover the oldest restaurant in the city Old Ebbitt Grill also apparently did the best breakfast, which after eating there, I can whole-heatedly agree with. Think pancakes, sausage and a river of maple syrup – what else could anyone ever want to fuel a huge day of sightseeing?!

Sample Some Chili Dogs

Speaking of food, if you’re not completely stuffed all day after Old Ebbitt Grill, then head over to the famous Ben’s Chili Bowl for some delicious chilli dogs, fries and the thickest of all thick shakes. This is a great place for people watching, and as you’ll notice from the walls, you should keep your eyes peeled as everyone from Obama himself to Bill Cosby has eaten here.

See The Snipers On The White House Roof

Is it just me, or do other people have a fascination with snipers too? Visiting the White House was made all the more exciting for me by pointing out the figures dressed in black on Barack and Michelle’s roof, however I restrained myself and didn’t make any sudden movements or sharp noises. Probably sound advice for anyone else visiting too!

Be Shocked At Arlington Cemetery

You may recall seeing photos of rows and rows of gravestones at some point over the last few years, and this is the place they were taken – Arlington Cemetery, Virginia. Just a metro ride away from the heart of DC you can see JFK’s grave, overlook the Pentagon (this is as close as you’ll get peeps!)  and that of every single American soldier killed in conflict since the civil war. Immense, but a must see.
