As an animal lover, I was absolutely stoked to see Elephants up close in India – but even though these Elephants seemed to be treated well by their keepers, it still made me a little bit sad that they were housed in a shed and used for tourist rides.
We were in Jaipur and on a high from the cheeky monkeys at the monkey temple, when our taxi driver announced he was taking us to see Elephants – I’d only ever seen them in a zoo before, so it was amazing to feel their skin and feed them grass. I think they liked us too – one friendly female hugged me with her trunk and wanted to play – such a magical experience!
I know some people may see this as encouraging wild animals to be kept in captivity for human profit, but these Elephants seemed happy and well fed, and it made me happy knowing that if they were being looked after here they weren’t out being killed for their ivory in the wild – a heinous act that no animal deserves, especially not these pretty as a picture creatures.
