Looking out from the top of Bratislava Castle across the river Danube you can still see the remnants of the Communist regime which ruled the city until as recently as 1989, when the country of Slovakia was born and the region of Czechoslovakia was finally dissolved.
I thought it was rather fitting that the day we visited it was rainy, grey and rather depressing, and standing at the foot of one of the most beautiful castles in Europe and looking out to rows and rows of concrete boxes it was quite a stark contrast, especially with the statue of the defiant soldier on his horse with a raised sword in his hand – an ironic symbol of victory separating the two very different worlds.

Oh, you’re making me homesick, this was a familiar sight to me when I lived in Bratislava! I lived in a very communist flat but not those in the pic (that’s Petrzalka) but further up the river away from the city/after the castle. Fantastic city!
What a great experience! I loved it – especially the food!
How interesting =). Nice picture too!
Thanks Lori! : )
