Don’t tell London, but I think I’ve just fallen completely head over heels in love with another city. I feel awful about it, but you can’t help who you love, can you?
I’ve just returned from 10 days in the Big Apple, and even though I’ve barely been back 12 hours, I miss it already. There’s something about a city that can both completely overwhelm you and make you feel so ‘at home’ you never want to leave all – and that’s even before you’ve reached the end of the block!
This love affair isn’t just a recent thing – It’s been brewing ever since I visited New York back in 2006. Young and bright-eyed I spent a week there on my own exploring and getting to know what made the city tick, and since then have been back twice, each time yearning to learn a little bit more and etch myself into the city’s culture so much so that one day, I know I’ll go there and never come back.
There’s not many people I know that don’t love it also – I mean, what’s not to love? The stunning skyline, the almost too crazy to be true New Yorkers, the culture, food, nightlife – I could go on forever!
So how did I know I’d fallen? Usually whenever I travel I start to miss London at some point and always look forward to returning home, but this time…nothing. Instead there was another emotion – dread – the feeling of never wanting to leave. The sensation of being ripped apart from the person you love as your train pulls away from the platform, and knowing there’s nothing you can do to stop it.
I had the most amazing time in the city, so I look forward to sharing my adventures with you over the coming weeks. As Jay Z agrees – there’s nothing you can’t do in New York. And yes, I’ll always love London, but there’s no denying the new relationship in my life – one that I hope will not be long-distance for much longer.

NYC is a good city to fall for. 🙂
I personally am torn between NYC and NOLA as my two all-time favorites (though, clearly, both for very different reasons).
Is it safe to assume that one day you may move to this enchanting city?
I am dying to go in December to see the Rockefeller Centre Xmas tree.
Also have some hot chocolate from Serendipity.
Looking for ward to your posts!
Murissa
Thanks Murissa – hope you get to visit at Xmas! I loved the Rockefella centre. Yes…could you tell I want to move there asap?! Haha, hopefully in the next couple of years : )
Thanks Beth – you have good taste : )
I’m with you on this one for sure! My dream is to spend a few months living in New York (a few months is all I want I think) just to do and see everything I want to. I’ve only spent a few days there in the past but just love the feel of it, such a global city.
There is no place like New York it always has something to offer you! So glad your trip was so great!
I get the same feeling when i revisit Chicago. Spent a year there and my heart aches when i visit and have to leave. NYC is on my list of places to visit soon!
I love it when a city just gets under your skin like that – even though it hurts when you have to leave! I hope you get to visit NYC sometime soon!
Thanks Kate – gotta love NYC : )
Totally agree – theres SO much to do, I dont even feel like I’ve skimmed the surface! Hope you get to live your dream and hang out over there at some point! : )
I feel the same way about New York! It was love at first sight the first time I visited there. I was lucky enough to be able to live there for almost a year with my job, but that was almost six years ago, and when it was time for me to move on, I was left wanting more from the city. I now live in Rome, Italy, but I still have a strong desire and love for New York City. A big part of me hopes I will make it back there to live one day. Good luck with your plans on a not-so-long-distance relationship with NYC!
Hi Andrea, thank you! Thats so exciting you got to spend a year there – I really hope you get to go back one day!
I went to NYC one year ago and I fell in love with the city from the moment I got out of the subway.
I love the people, they are so friendly! We were standing there with a map in our hands and a lady immediately came to help us out.
I want to move to NYC one day. I know I’m still young (18) and I still have to go to college for 4 or 5 years, but maybe I can do my internship in a (Belgian) company in NYC.
But when I’m 21, I’ll definitely go back for a week or 10 days.
Hi Lisa, I so agree! Good luck with your studies and getting back to NYC! : )
It’s funny you say that, for I’m from America and spent the last 4 years living in London and due to a visa expiring had to head back stateside. I’ve been in NYC for the past 3 months and it does nothing for me. My love is and always will be London. To me there’s nothing like it in the world and I’ve never felt so at home. I try hard to like NYC and it’s ok sometimes but it’s just not the same. Most days I try very hard to forget I’ve ever lived in London..I suppose the morale of the story is you want what you can’t have.
I also for to mention that I try so hard everyday to see and feel what others seem to feel for this city, yet I simply can’t understand why people looove this city so much. To me London is pure magic and I miss Ol’blightly to the core! Wish we could trade passports!
