A lot goes on in Krakow’s main square, Rynek Glowny – Tourists angling for the best shot of the city’s Town Hall Tower, local street vendors tempting you with their giant bread pretzels, and not least of all, the organisation of horse and cart drivers into a very civil taxi-like rank. The sight of a winding conga line of drivers, horses and carts wraps itself around the entire square, with each trying to lure you to take a ride with them by way of various outrageous claims such as ‘This is the most famous horse in Poland!’.
What I loved most about the horses were their brightly coloured saddles and collars – the reds, blues, greens and yellows swirling around as tourists rode off on their rides. I felt like I was swept back to Victorian times, not a rainy, grey 2010 afternoon! As the horses await the next ride they graze on fruit while their owners brush them and show off to the tourists. So, if you ever find yourself in Krakow waiting for a horse and cart ride, be sure to bring along a nice juicy apple, you’ll be the favorite horse-rider in all of Poland!

This makes me think of the horses that the mounted border patrol rides between the US/Canada border. Always so regal. You ever ridden one like this? In the carriage maybe? Looks fun.
They always look so grand don’t they?! I love it…If you’re lucky sometimes in London you’ll spot the Royal horses around near Buckingham Palace, I bet they are the luckiest horses in the world! I’ve ridden some in the carriage in New York once, so touristy, but I loved it!
