Unless you are rich beyond your wildest dreams, nobody really enjoys spending money when they don’t have to. But when on a two week holiday or an extensive jaunt around the world, saving money is often a big part of your thoughts, even though it can be hard to avoid tourist prices when out and about enjoying yourself. Greece is no different to anywhere else in this regard – tourist traps are in place which can and will bleed your wallet dry.
But by following a few simple hints and tips, you can not only save a few pennies here and there, but also benefit from a more ‘local’ experience too:
Drink the local produce
At home you may like nothing better than that imported bottle of wine from Australia, or the premium lager from Belgium. Of course, these little treats are easily found on mainland Greece as well as the islands; however you will end up paying a premium price for these imported delicacies. It is far more economical to stick to the local wine and beer if you want to save some money. And the best thing is, it is just as good if not better!
Find the Tavernas
If it is local produce you are after, find a nice little local taverna. These small restaurants are true, authentic Greek establishments which are nearly always a lot cheaper than the restaurants which are geared towards the tourist in city centre locations. As a word of warning, some taverna’s are starting to gear themselves towards foreign visitors – try and find one which has kept it authenticity for a true taverna experience – you will not be disappointed.
Visit a Quiet Island
Greece has over two thousand islands, which means you certainly have a choice in front of you. But it is worth remembering that many, such as Corfu, have areas where mass tourism is the main attraction and as a result, prices can be slightly higher then in quieter areas. You therefore could head to one of the quieter islands and pay local prices, or heads to a quieter part of the popular islands. Crete holidays do not need to be expensive – it is just a case of avoiding the tourist traps in restaurants and bars.
Use local transport
Whilst it is tempting to hire a car for what seems like a small amount of money, it is worth remembering that you will need to fill it up with petrol and include parking charges. But if you want to save money, have more of an adventure and interact with the locals, use local buses, trains and coaches. Any traveller will tell you that local transport is the best way to really get a flavour of a country and this includes those on cheap all inclusive holidays too!
